Blog clear up (2)
Comments added. Note on tools. Update
forecasts.
So I've just added the ability for anyone to add
comments to the blog. I hope that some of you who have visited some of our
destinations or just feel like saying something might give it a go. Really I've
no idea if/how this will be used but it's nice to put the facilty up there and
see what happens with it over the
year.
I use iBlog, which is a
mac-targetted product, to produce the blog. I'm not sure how it compares with
other blogging programmes but it does what I need and has a nice interface (for
me to use). iBlog doesn't have native support for Comments and recommends a
couple of freeware add-ins. As you can see in the credit, I used
Haloscan.
We can write blog entries any
time we can fire up my Powerbook, and it's coming with us. To publish the
entries I'll obviously need some form of connectivity onto the internet. I
don't know how frequently any of us will write entries - it will be somewhere
between daily and weekly, I guess. I certainly don't yet know how often we'll
get to
post
entries so that they can be read. In Africa it will be infrequent. I heard on
the radio this week that the entire continent of Africa has less phone cabling
than Manhattan, and this isn't (nice idea, Ross) because Africa skipped a stop
and went all wifi. So while we're in Botswana and Namibia it's very unlikely
that we'll be able to publish anything that we write or photograph. However, my
wifi directory reports a couple of spots in Cape Town so we can splurge an
update then. In Morocco one of the phone networks supports GPRS so there is the
possibility of more frequent updates, cost and performance permitting. By the
time we hit North America I'm hoping that we will be able to publish updates
virtually as frequently as we write
them.
Anyone who has an interest in the
blog but doesn't want to be running futile checks for weeks on end when there
are no updates can use an RSS newsreader and subscribe to the site. As with any
other source, this will poll for you, along with any other sites that you're
checking.
