Luggage!
What do you take for 12 months?
Earlier this week we packed all of our bags; here
they are:
The large bag in the middle at the
back is a covering bag containing my rucsac, which is a 75 litre Berghaus
Bioflex. The bag should make it a little harder for baggage handlers to damage.
My other bag is the blue Timbuktu courier bag at the front that holds my mac and
which I'll take as hand luggage. The pack at the rear left is Paula's main one,
which is a Patagonia wheeling bag. Paula's hand luggage (along with her hand
bag, which is not in the snap) is the bag in the middle at the front.
The wheeled rucsacs in the middle
belong to Zoe (the red one) and Heidi (the black one). Each of these has a
separable day pack, detached in the picture, which they'll use as their carry-on
bags. The remaining bag at the back right is another rucsac bag like mine, this
time holding only Paula's, Zoe's and Heidi's sleeping bags (mine is in my
rucsac). We did originally think that the girls may take theirs on planes with
them, but we've since changed our
minds. My rucsac, once in the bag
shown, weighs in at 52 pounds, which is heavier than I would like. I packed it
the other day with the things that will be in it when we are walking in Corsica
- which is the only time when I'll have to carry it for a long period. Then,
with 2 litres of water on board, it came in at 31 pounds, which is manageable
but I'd still like to reduce it by a few pounds if I
can.My courier bag weighs 16 lbs when
fully loaded.And that's it!
Surprisingly perhaps, little of the total weight is accounted for by clothing.
Virtually all of my clothes are "smart" Patagonia garments that weigh next to
nothing, and there aren't many of them. The heavy goods are the cameras (I have
two + a comcorder), sleeping gear (bags, bivvy bags, mats), books and so forth.
But we've almost stuck to one bag + one carry-on item that each of their owners
can manage, with the single exception being the (light) sleeping bags
bag.Ian
